The short answer

After compatibility, the specifications that separate crossbow bolts are straightness tolerance and weight matching. Carbon Express publishes .002 inch straightness checked to a ten-thousandth with spine sorted to .0025 and weight to 1 grain; TenPoint publishes .001 inch. Most budget shafts publish nothing.

Carbon Express Maxima Contour Crossbolts

Carbon Express
9.0/ 10

Dual Spine Weight Forward is not marketing: the shaft has two spines, a stiffer section forward of a softer one, and Carbon Express claims it cuts oscillation in half. The figures are the reason to buy — .002 inch straightness checked to a ten-thousandth, spine sorted to .0025 inch, weight sorted to 1 grain. Nothing else on this page publishes that level of sorting.

What it does well

  • Straightness, spine and weight tolerances all published and all tight
  • Dual-spine construction claims 50 percent less oscillation
  • Both moon nocks and flat C-Nocks in the pack, so it fits more bows
  • Laser-matched sets rather than randomly boxed shafts

Where it falls short

  • Three per pack, so a full quiver costs more than it looks
  • 390 grains is mid-weight; heavy-bolt shooters will want more

400 grains in a 16-inch shaft, inspected to .001 inch straightness, with a one-piece lighted nock that the bowstring activates on firing. Short bolts exist because reverse-draw and compact bows need them. The brass insert pushes weight forward, which is what gets a short arrow to behave.

What it does well

  • .001 inch straightness is the tightest claim on this page
  • The lighted nock activates on the shot and pulls out to switch off
  • A brass insert forward keeps a short shaft stable
  • 400 grains carries energy well for the length

Where it falls short

  • 16 inches fits reverse-draw and compact bows, not every bow
  • Most expensive bolts here
  • Lighted nocks are not legal for hunting in every state

Wicked Ridge Match 400

Wicked Ridge
8.5/ 10

Six 20-inch shafts at 400 grains with a 46-grain aluminum insert that produces 14 percent front-of-center, which Wicked Ridge claims gives up to 20 percent tighter groups than its previous arrow. Six per pack is the practical detail: that is a full quiver and spares in one purchase.

What it does well

  • Six per pack, which is a quiver's worth in one box
  • 14 percent front-of-center published, which most makers do not state
  • A 46-grain aluminum insert rather than a plastic one
  • Alpha-Nock engages the string deeply, which reduces shoot-over

Where it falls short

  • .004 inch straightness is looser than the Carbon Express and TenPoint shafts

Six bolts with the full dimensional picture published: .300 inch inside diameter, .344 outside, .003 straightness, and a 95-grain brass insert in the 20-inch version. The Blood Ring near the nock is a genuinely useful idea — the color on the ring after a hit tells you something about where the arrow went.

What it does well

  • Full dimensional specification published, which most budget bolts skip
  • Six per pack with a 95-grain brass insert already fitted
  • The Blood Ring gives you information after the shot
  • Rugged Wrap construction is built for 400 fps-plus bows

Where it falls short

  • Half-moon nocks only, so flat-nock bows need a different bolt
  • .003 straightness is good rather than exceptional

How we picked

Published straightness and weight tolerance first, then front-of-center detail, nock design and pack size. Where a maker publishes no tolerance at all, the set scores lower — not because it is bad, but because you cannot verify what you are buying. See our methodology.

What to look for in a crossbow bolt

Length: match the bow, no substitutions

Common lengths are 16, 18, 20 and 22 in, and the right one depends on the rail and power stroke. Sixteen-inch shafts exist for reverse-draw and compact bows. A bolt shorter than specified can leave the rail before the string releases it, which is a destructive failure.

Weight: respect the minimum

Your bow publishes a minimum arrow weight. Below it, energy the arrow should absorb goes into the limbs instead — the same mechanism as a dry fire, in miniature, every shot. For deer, around 400 gr complete is the mainstream answer and it is what most bows ship with. See crossbow bolt weight.

Nock type: the one that catches people out

  • Half-moon — a groove that must be indexed to the string every time you load.
  • Flat — orientation does not matter. Excalibur's Rhino nocks and CeaseFire-compatible bows use these.
  • Alpha-Nock — TenPoint and Wicked Ridge; a deep groove and large radius base that prevents shoot-over.
  • V-Track — Killer Instinct; designed to reduce center-serving wear, which is the usual reason a string needs early replacement.
  • Proprietary — the CenterPoint Hellion requires CP400 lighted nocks; Ravin uses its own system.

Buying six excellent bolts with the wrong nock is money spent for nothing. Check the manual.

Front-of-center, the cheapest accuracy upgrade

How much of the total weight sits forward of the balance point. Wicked Ridge publishes 14 percent FOC from a 46 gr aluminum insert and claims up to 20 percent tighter groups than its previous arrow; Guide Gear's Victory-made bolts carry a 110 gr brass insert, the heaviest here. More weight forward makes an arrow fly like a dart rather than a tumbling stick.

Straightness and weight sorting

Straightness is how much the shaft deviates along its length; weight sorting is how closely the shafts in a pack match each other. Carbon Express publishes both plus a spine tolerance, and laser-matches its sets. At 30 yards you will not measure the difference between .001 and .004. At 60 yards, and on a fast bow, you will.

Which to buy

Match the bolt to your situation

  1. You want the tightest tolerancesCarbon Express Maxima Contour — straightness, spine and weight all published and all tight.
  2. A reverse-draw or compact bowTenPoint EVO-X CenterPunch16 at 16 in and 400 gr, with .001 in straightness.
  3. A full quiver in one purchaseWicked Ridge Match 400 or Bloodsport Witness — six per pack.
  4. Best specified budget shaftBloodsport Witness — full dimensions published, 95 gr brass insert, six per pack.
  5. You keep losing arrows at duskKiller Instinct HYPR-V lighted, or add lighted nocks to the bolts you have. Check your state rules first.

Buy a dozen of one bolt

Not three of four different ones. Your scope's speed dial is set for a velocity that depends on arrow weight, so mixing 350 gr and 400 gr bolts means two different trajectories out of the same bow. Pick a bolt, verify your zero with it, and buy it by the dozen.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best crossbow bolts?
On published tolerances, the Carbon Express Maxima Contour: .002 inch straightness checked to a ten-thousandth, spine sorted to .0025 and weight to 1 grain, with both moon and flat nocks in the pack. For a compact or reverse-draw bow, TenPoint's 16-inch CenterPunch16 publishes .001 inch straightness.
What length crossbow bolt do I need?
Whatever your bow's manual specifies, with no substitutions. Common lengths are 16, 18, 20 and 22 inches. The arrows that came with the bow are your reference — a bolt shorter than specified can leave the rail before the string releases it.
Does crossbow bolt straightness matter?
More as distance and speed increase. At 30 yards the difference between .001 and .004 inch is not measurable in your groups. At 60 yards, and on a 430 fps bow, a small initial error has more flight time to grow. Buy on weight matching and nock fit first.
What nock do I need for my crossbow?
The one your manual specifies. Half-moon nocks must be indexed to the string; flat nocks do not care about orientation; TenPoint and Wicked Ridge use Alpha-Nock; Killer Instinct uses V-Track; some bows require proprietary nocks, like the CenterPoint Hellion's CP400. The wrong nock lets the string skip the arrow.
How many crossbow bolts should I buy?
A dozen of one bolt rather than a few each of several. Your scope's speed dial is calibrated for a velocity that depends on arrow weight, so mixing weights gives you two trajectories from one bow. Settle on a bolt, verify your zero with it, then stock up.
