Best for fast bows
The best broadheads for a 400 fps crossbow
Above 400 fps, air load on a mechanical's blades is what defeats the retention system. These five are built for it, and we say which part does the work.

Above 400 fps, choose either a one-piece fixed head with nothing that can deploy, or a mechanical whose blades are not held closed by a consumable rubber collar. Grim Reaper publishes a 400 fps rating; TenPoint's EVO-X Montec is specified for high-speed crossbows; Rage's No Collar design removes the part that fails.
The failure mode is specific. At high velocity the air load on a mechanical's exposed blade edges is greater, and a rubber shock collar or O-ring holding those blades closed is a consumable part under more stress than its designer assumed. When it lets go in flight, the head opens before impact — accuracy is gone and the arrow is dangerous.
In detail
Five heads for fast bows
TenPoint EVO-X Montec
Built for TenPoint by G5, which is to say it is a Montec specified for high-speed crossbows: 100 grains, three fixed blades, a 1-1/8 inch cut, one-piece MIM construction and a 100 percent steel ferrule. If you shoot a fast bow and want a fixed head, this is the one that was designed for the application.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100 gr |
| Cutting diameter | 1-1/8 in |
| Blades | 3, fixed |
| Construction | One-piece MIM, 100% steel ferrule |
| Designed for | High-speed crossbows |
| Sharpening | Diamond cut |
| Per pack | 3 |
What it does well
- Specified for high-speed crossbows, not adapted from a compound head
- One-piece construction with nothing to come loose
- Made by G5, whose Montec is the reference fixed head

Rage Hypodermic Trypan NC
A one-piece titanium ferrule, .039-inch stainless blades, a hybrid tip and No Collar retention — meaning the blades are held closed by the ferrule geometry rather than a rubber band you have to replace every shot. For a fast bow, the collar is the part that fails, so removing it matters.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100 gr |
| Blade thickness | 0.039 in |
| Type | Mechanical, expandable |
| Ferrule | One-piece titanium |
| Retention | No Collar |
| Tip | Hybrid |
| Per pack | 3 |
What it does well
- No Collar retention removes the consumable rubber band
- A titanium ferrule is lighter and stronger than aluminum
- .039-inch blades are thick for a mechanical
- Ferrule alignment adapter helps it spin true

Grim Reaper X-Bow Razor Cut
A 3-blade mechanical with a 1.5-inch cut on a one-piece stainless tip, and the listing states it is engineered for crossbows and stable to 400 fps. That speed statement is the thing to look for: plenty of mechanicals are sold for compound bows and come apart at crossbow velocity.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100 gr |
| Cutting diameter | 1.5 in |
| Blades | 3 |
| Type | Mechanical |
| Rated speed | Up to 400 fps |
| Tip | One-piece stainless steel |
| Accuracy claim | Field-point accuracy to 100 yd |
What it does well
- A published speed rating, which most broadhead listings omit
- A 1.5-inch cut from three blades
- A one-piece stainless tip holds an edge through bone

G5 Montec 100 gr
One-piece metal-injection-molded steel with a 1 to 1-1/8 inch cut, cut-on-contact geometry and every head spin-tested before it ships. There are no blades to replace, no screws to loosen and no collar to fail. For a fast bow, a fixed one-piece head is the most reliable thing you can put on the front of a bolt.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100 gr (85 and 125 also offered) |
| Cutting diameter | 1 to 1-1/8 in |
| Blades | 3, fixed |
| Construction | One-piece MIM steel |
| Sharpening | Diamond cut, cut-on-contact |
| Quality control | 100% spin-tested |
| Per pack | 3 |
What it does well
- One piece: no blades, screws or collars to fail
- Every head spin-tested before it ships
- Resharpenable, so a head survives more than one animal
- Cut-on-contact geometry starts cutting immediately

Muzzy Trocar HBX Hybrid
Four blades: two fixed, two mechanical, with the fixed pair offset to induce spin. It is a genuine middle path — the fixed blades cut on contact and the mechanicals widen the channel, and the chisel tip and stainless ferrule are built to survive bone.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100 gr |
| Blades | 4 (2 fixed, 2 mechanical) |
| Type | Hybrid |
| Tip | Chisel |
| Ferrule | Stainless steel |
| Design note | Offset fixed blades induce spin |
| Cutting diameter |
What it does well
- Fixed blades cut on contact even if the mechanicals do not open
- Offset fixed blades stabilize the arrow in flight
- A stainless ferrule and chisel tip for bone

How we picked
Published speed rating where one exists; otherwise a design that structurally cannot deploy early. One-piece construction and collar-free retention both qualify. See our methodology.
Why each one is suitable
| Head | Type | Why it suits a fast bow |
|---|---|---|
| TenPoint EVO-X Montec | Fixed, one piece | Built by G5 and specified for high-speed crossbows. Nothing can deploy because nothing moves. |
| Rage Hypodermic Trypan NC | Mechanical | No Collar retention: blades held by ferrule geometry, not a rubber part. .039 in blades and a titanium ferrule. |
| Grim Reaper X-Bow Razor Cut | Mechanical | The only head here with a published speed rating — stated stable to 400 fps. |
| G5 Montec | Fixed, one piece | One-piece MIM steel, spin tested. The reliability baseline at any speed. |
| Muzzy Trocar HBX | Hybrid | Two fixed blades always cut, so a failed mechanical deployment is not a total failure. |
What else changes above 400 fps
Your target
Most bag targets stop at 425 fps. A 430 fps or 470 fps bow needs the Rinehart 18-1 (500 fps) or the SpyderWeb 20XL (no stated limit). And you need a broadhead-capable target for the pre-season check, which is a separate purchase from your practice bag. See targets for fast bows.
Your bolt tolerances
A small initial error has more flight time to grow at higher speed. Straightness goes from a nicety to something worth paying for: the Carbon Express Maxima Contour publishes .002 in as a maximum, and TenPoint's CenterPunch16 publishes .001 in.
Your nocks
Nock fit matters more because string-to-nock engagement is doing more work. Alpha-Nock and V-Track systems both exist to address exactly this, and a worn or loose nock on a fast bow is a flier waiting to happen.
Your arrow weight
A heavier arrow is slower, quieter and carries more energy, and 400 gr complete is the mainstream answer. Chasing peak fps with a light arrow on an already-fast bow buys a flatter trajectory and costs noise, penetration and margin.
What to avoid above 400 fps
- Heads designed for compound bows, however good. The speed is the problem, not the quality.
- Shock-collar mechanicals unless the maker publishes a crossbow speed rating.
- Very wide cuts on thin blades. More air load, more resistance, more to go wrong.
- Mixing arrow weights. Your scope's speed dial is set for one velocity.
What we would buy
The TenPoint EVO-X Montec if you want nothing to think about: one-piece steel, specified for the application, 1-1/8 in cut. The Rage Trypan NC if you want a mechanical's wound channel without a consumable retention part. The Muzzy Trocar HBX if you want the hybrid insurance that there is no such thing as a total deployment failure.
