Best for fast bows

The best targets for a high-FPS crossbow

Above 450 fps, most of the target market is unusable. Two products here clear it outright and three more are worth knowing about.

The short answer

For a crossbow over 450 fps, the SpyderWeb 20XL (no stated speed limit) and the Rinehart 18-1 (rated to 500 fps) are the two targets on this site that will stop it. The Morrell High Roller and Delta McKenzie Speedbag Revolver are rated to 450 fps and are the ceiling for anything else.

If you bought a Ravin R470, a Ravin R29X or a CenterPoint Wrath 430, this is the page you need before you buy anything else. A 425 fps bag target and a 470 fps bow is a bolt you will not get back and a target that is finished.

SpyderWeb 20XL No Speed Limit

SpyderWeb
9.1/ 10

SpyderWeb sells this one on the absence of a rating: no speed limit, built on a woven Spylar Mesh structure that absorbs and releases rather than gripping. If you own a 430 or 470 fps bow, the usual 400 to 450 fps bag ratings are a problem and this is the clean answer. Over 200 aiming points and handmade in Michigan.

What it does well

  • No published speed ceiling, which no bag target here can match
  • Easy arrow pull is the design goal, not an afterthought
  • Over 200 aiming points spreads wear over the whole face
  • Built for high-volume practice

Where it falls short

  • No dimensions published on the listing
  • Expensive — this is the second-priciest target here
  • Mesh targets are not broadhead targets; use field points

9.0/ 10

Eighteen shootable faces of self-healing foam, broadhead capable, rated to 500 fps and explicitly crossbow approved. This is the one target on the site that handles the two hardest things at once: a 470 fps bolt and a fixed broadhead. 15 inches a side and light enough to carry by the handle.

What it does well

  • 500 fps and broadhead capable together, which is rare
  • Eighteen faces means you rotate rather than shooting out one spot
  • Self-healing foam closes the hole behind the arrow
  • Light with a carry handle

Where it falls short

  • Expensive next to a bag target
  • Fifteen inches is a small face for a beginner at 40 yards

High-density self-healing foam rated to 450 fps across six sides with 21 bullseyes, and an EZ-Tote handle. 450 fps covers every bow here except the R470, and the six-sided rotation is what keeps a target alive through a season of practice.

A 12-inch cube, 15 pounds, six shootable sides with calibration grids, rated to 450 fps, for about the price of three broadheads. The rating is the headline: almost nothing else at this price is rated past 400 fps. It is small, so it is a practice cube rather than a sight-in target for a beginner.

What it does well

  • 450 fps rated at the lowest price of any target here
  • 15 pounds and 12 inches, so it moves anywhere
  • Calibration grids help you track a sight-in

Where it falls short

  • A 12-inch face is small; expect to miss it while sighting in
  • No broadhead rating

Six faces, two of them 3D deer zones: one with outlined vitals, one showing anatomically correct organs. For a hunter switching to a crossbow, the organ face is worth more than another bullseye — crossbow shots tend to be closer and the angle matters more. Self-healing foam handles field points, fixed blades and expandables.

What it does well

  • An anatomical organ face teaches shot placement, not just grouping
  • Handles expandables as well as fixed blades
  • Six faces spread the wear
  • A larger face than the 18-1 at a similar price

Where it falls short

  • No speed rating published, which matters at 450 fps and up
  • Heavy for its size

How we picked

Published speed rating, full stop. Then broadhead capability and durability. Targets with no published rating are excluded from this page entirely, however good they are otherwise. See our methodology.

The RhinoBlock is included because it handles broadheads and expandables; its lack of a published rating is the reason it is last.

Why fast bolts defeat ordinary targets

A bag target stops an arrow with layered fiber fill that grips the shaft through friction over a short distance. The energy it can absorb per inch of travel is finite. Past the target's design speed, the bolt either passes through entirely or stops so deep that the fill has clamped the full length of the shaft — and pulling it out tears both.

SpyderWeb's answer is a woven mesh designed to absorb and release rather than clamp, which is why it can claim no speed limit and the easiest pull here. Rinehart's answer is dense self-healing foam, which closes behind the arrow instead of gripping it.

The other things a fast bow needs

  • Broadheads rated for the speed. Crossbow velocity opens mechanical blades in flight on compound-bow heads. See broadheads for 400 fps bows.
  • Tighter bolt tolerances. A small initial error grows over a longer flight time. See best crossbow bolts.
  • A scope whose speed range reaches your bow. The TenPoint RangeMaster's 380-505 fps is the only range here that covers 470 fps.
  • A sound plan for noise. More energy means more to dissipate. See crossbow noise.

Our pick

The Rinehart 18-1 if you can have only one: 500 fps, broadhead capable, eighteen faces, and light enough to carry by the handle. The SpyderWeb 20XL if you shoot high volume and want the easiest arrow pull on the site. The Speedbag Revolver as a cheap 450 fps discharge target for the end of a sit.

Frequently asked questions

What target stops a 500 fps crossbow?
On this site, the Rinehart 18-1, which publishes a rating up to 500 fps and is broadhead capable, and the SpyderWeb 20XL, which publishes no speed limit at all. Nothing else here is rated above 450 fps.
Will a bag target stop a 450 fps crossbow?
Most will not. Bag targets on this site stop at 425 fps, and the Hurricane's figure is specified for standard-diameter arrows. Above 450 fps you need self-healing foam rated for it or a woven-mesh target with no stated limit.
What happens if my crossbow is faster than the target rating?
Either the bolt passes clean through — and keeps going into whatever is behind — or it buries so deep that the fill has clamped the whole shaft, and pulling it out damages both. You lose the bolt, often the broadhead, and the target.
Should I buy a target rated above my bow's speed?
Yes, where you can. A target at exactly your bow's rating has no margin for a cold morning, a worn face, or a heavier arrow than the maker tested with. One step up is cheap insurance.
Why do fast bolts get stuck in targets?
Because a target absorbs a finite amount of energy per inch of arrow travel. Past its design speed the bolt goes deeper than intended, so the fill grips the full length of the shaft rather than the front few inches, and extraction tears both. Mesh and self-healing foam are designed around that problem.
