Lighted nocks
Crossbow bolts with lighted nocks
A lit nock tells you where the arrow went and where it stopped. Before you buy, check two things: your string's nock type, and whether your state allows them.

A lighted nock is a nock with an LED that switches on from the shock of the shot, so you can see the arrow's flight, read the hit, and find the arrow afterwards. Buy factory-lit bolts matched to your bow, or retrofit a nock like the Nockturnal Launchpad to bolts you own - but check your state's rules first, because lighted nocks are prohibited for hunting in some of them.
There are two honest reasons to want one and one reason people buy them that does not hold up. The honest ones: you see the arrow in flight, which tells you whether it hit where you aimed or deflected; and you find the arrow afterwards in long grass or leaf litter at last light, which both saves money and tells you something about penetration. The reason that does not hold up: a lit nock does not make a blood trail easier to follow and it is not a tracking device.
On a crossbow specifically there is one extra consideration. Crossbow nocks are not interchangeable - a half-moon nock, a flat nock and a proprietary system like TenPoint's Alpha-Nock or Killer Instinct's V-Track are not substitutes for each other, and the wrong nock on the wrong string is a dry-fire risk rather than a performance compromise. That is why the easiest route to lighted nocks is usually a factory-lit bolt from your bow's own maker.
Check the law before you check the catalog
Lighted nocks are regulated separately from crossbows themselves, and the rules are not uniform. Some states permit them outright, some prohibit them for hunting, and a few restrict them by season or by species. Nockturnal prints the warning on its own packaging, which tells you how real the issue is. Confirm the current rule for the state and season you are hunting before you buy - our crossbow hunting regulations page explains what to look for and where the authoritative source is. If the answer is no, you can still use them on the practice range, where they are genuinely useful for finding arrows in grass.
What a lighted nock costs you
- Weight, at the wrong end of the arrow. A lit nock adds mass behind the balance point, which lowers front-of-center. The effect is small but it is in the opposite direction from everything you want for penetration - see crossbow bolt weight.
- A re-zero. Any change to arrow weight changes trajectory. If you add lit nocks to a quiver you had zeroed with standard nocks, confirm the zero again.
- Battery life, which is finite. TenPoint publishes about 24 h for the Alpha-Blaze unit and Nockturnal publishes over 20 h for the Launchpad. A nock left switched on in the quiver after a practice session is a dead nock on opening day.
- Money. Factory-lit bolts cost noticeably more per arrow than the same shaft with a standard nock.
How they switch on, and how to switch them off
Almost all of them are shock-activated: the acceleration of the shot closes the circuit and the LED lights. Switching off is the part people get wrong. Most designs need the nock pressed or twisted against a hard surface in a specific way, and the instructions come in the packet rather than on the shaft. Check that you can turn one off indoors before you take six of them hunting, or you will discover the method in the dark with a dead battery.
In detail
Three factory-lit bolts and one retrofit nock
TenPoint EVO-X Lighted CenterPunch16
400 grains in a 16-inch shaft, inspected to .001 inch straightness, with a one-piece lighted nock that the bowstring activates on firing. Short bolts exist because reverse-draw and compact bows need them. The brass insert pushes weight forward, which is what gets a short arrow to behave.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 16 in |
| Weight | 400 gr |
| Straightness | within .001 in |
| Weight matching | within 1 gr per arrow |
| Carbon | 33 MSI modulus, LAZER-TECH weave |
| Nock | Alpha-Nock HP with Alpha-Blaze lighted unit, ~24 h battery |
| Vanes | 2.1 in Q2i, slight offset |
What it does well
- .001 inch straightness is the tightest claim on this page
- The lighted nock activates on the shot and pulls out to switch off
- A brass insert forward keeps a short shaft stable
- 400 grains carries energy well for the length

Killer Instinct Lighted HYPR-V 20-inch
390 grains, .300 inside diameter, .003 straightness, grain-matched to a pound, with an LED nock and the V-Track nock system Killer Instinct introduced to reduce center-serving wear. The serving-wear point is worth taking seriously: a worn serving is the most common reason a crossbow string needs replacing early.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 in |
| Weight | 390 gr with 100 gr point |
| Straightness | 0.003 in |
| Inside diameter | 0.300 in |
| Weight tolerance | +/- 1.0 gr |
| Nock | V-Track system, LED lighted |
| Fits | All Killer Instinct bows except 1120 Swat XP and Furious Pro 9.5 |
What it does well
- The V-Track nock reduces center-serving wear
- Full specification published: weight, straightness, diameter, tolerance
- Lighted nocks make a low-light recovery far easier
- Backwards compatible with past Killer Instinct models

Guide Gear Trophy Hunter Pro (by Victory)
Made by Victory Archery, carrying a 110-grain brass insert — the heaviest on this page — plus a red lighted half-moon nock and Victory's ICE coating, which the listing credits with easier penetration and less noise through the rail. The heavy insert is the reason to pick these: front-of-center weight is what makes a bolt fly like a dart.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 in |
| Brass insert | 110 gr |
| Nock | Red lighted half-moon |
| Carbon | 100% standard high modulus |
| Vanes | 3 in Bohning X-Vanes |
| Coating | Victory ICE |
| Straightness |
What it does well
- A 110-grain brass insert is the heaviest here, which maximizes front-of-center
- Lighted nocks included rather than a separate purchase
- ICE coating reduces rail friction and noise

Nockturnal Launchpad Crossbow Nock
Over 20 hours of lithium-powered light in a clear polycarbonate body, three to a pack. If you like your current bolts and only want the recovery advantage of a lit nock, this is the cheaper route than buying new lighted arrows. Check your state rules first — lighted nocks are prohibited for hunting in some.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Battery life | Over 20 h |
| Per pack | 3 |
| Body | Clear polycarbonate |
| Weatherproofing | Waterproof and shock proof |
| Color | Green |
| Legal note | Lighted nocks are prohibited for hunting in some states |
What it does well
- Over 20 hours of battery, far beyond a single sit
- Adds the recovery advantage to arrows you already trust
- Waterproof and shock proof

Which route to take
| Route | What you get | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Factory-lit bolts from your bow's maker | A matched shaft, the right nock, and a published weight | That the model is listed for your bow |
| Factory-lit bolts from a third party | Usually cheaper per arrow | Nock type against your string - half-moon, flat or proprietary |
| Retrofit lighted nocks | Light on the arrows you already own and trust | That the nock fits both your shaft's inside diameter and your string |
What the four picks are each for
TenPoint EVO-X Lighted CenterPunch16
The best-specified lit bolt here: 400 gr at 16 in, straightness within .001 in, weight matched within 1 gr per arrow, and an Alpha-Nock HP carrying the Alpha-Blaze lighted unit with roughly 24 h of battery. If you shoot a TenPoint or Wicked Ridge reverse-draw bow that takes a 16-inch shaft, this is the obvious answer and the nock question answers itself.
Killer Instinct Lighted HYPR-V 20-inch
390 gr with a 100 gr point, 0.003 in straightness, 0.300 in inside diameter, weight tolerance +/- 1.0 gr, on the V-Track nock system with an LED built in. Killer Instinct lists it as fitting all of its crossbows except the 1120 Swat XP and the Furious Pro 9.5 - which is exactly the kind of exception worth reading before you order.
Guide Gear Trophy Hunter Pro
Built by Victory, with a red lighted half-moon nock, a 110 gr brass insert - the heaviest published insert on this site - 3 in Bohning X-Vanes and Victory's ICE coating. The half-moon nock makes it a straightforward fit on the many bows that use one, and the heavy insert partly offsets the weight the lit nock adds at the back.
Nockturnal Launchpad Crossbow Nock
The retrofit route: a clear polycarbonate crossbow nock with over 20 h of battery, waterproof and shock proof, three to a pack, in green. This is how you put light on the bolts you already shoot and trust, and it is the cheapest way to try the idea. Nockturnal's own packaging carries the legal warning, and you still have to confirm the nock matches both your shaft and your string.
Our view
Buy factory-lit bolts from your bow's own maker for the hunting quiver, and use the retrofit nocks on practice arrows. The weight and the re-zero are small, manageable costs; the nock-fit question is not something to improvise on a hunting arrow. And do the legality check first, because in some states this is a decision that has already been made for you.
One last practical note. The place a lit nock earns its money most reliably is not the hunt - it is the range at dusk, finding the one arrow that went high over a bag target into long grass. If that is a recurring annoyance, a three-pack of retrofit nocks is a few dollars well spent even if you never hunt with them. The target that stops them in the first place is covered on best crossbow targets, and the shaft options are on best crossbow bolts.
