Best elk bolts
The best crossbow bolts for elk
Factory shafts almost all weigh 390 to 400 grains. The elk-specific part of the decision is the insert, the straightness tolerance and whether you trust the published figure.

The best crossbow bolt for elk is the TenPoint EVO-X Lighted CenterPunch16: 400 grains, straightness within 0.001 inch, weight matched within 1 grain per arrow, and a lighted nock for a dusk shot. No shaft on the market is sold as an elk bolt - what makes an arrow an elk arrow is total weight, and most of that is the insert and the head.
This page starts with an uncomfortable fact: there is no such thing as an elk-specific crossbow bolt. Look at the published weights across the whole market and they cluster hard around 390 to 400 gr for a 20-inch shaft, because that is what modern crossbows are designed and warranted to shoot. Nobody sells you a 600 gr factory crossbow arrow.
What that means practically is that the elk part of the decision is not which shaft you buy - it is how much mass you put at the front of it, and how tight the shaft's published tolerances are. Front-of-center and total arrow weight are what carry energy into a deep chest cavity through heavy bone, and both are bought with an insert and a broadhead, not with a sticker on the box. Crossbow kinetic energy sets out the arithmetic; this page covers what to actually buy.
In detail
Five shafts worth putting a heavy insert in
TenPoint EVO-X Lighted CenterPunch16
400 grains in a 16-inch shaft, inspected to .001 inch straightness, with a one-piece lighted nock that the bowstring activates on firing. Short bolts exist because reverse-draw and compact bows need them. The brass insert pushes weight forward, which is what gets a short arrow to behave.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 16 in |
| Weight | 400 gr |
| Straightness | within .001 in |
| Weight matching | within 1 gr per arrow |
| Carbon | 33 MSI modulus, LAZER-TECH weave |
| Nock | Alpha-Nock HP with Alpha-Blaze lighted unit, ~24 h battery |
| Vanes | 2.1 in Q2i, slight offset |
What it does well
- .001 inch straightness is the tightest claim on this page
- The lighted nock activates on the shot and pulls out to switch off
- A brass insert forward keeps a short shaft stable
- 400 grains carries energy well for the length

Wicked Ridge Match 400
Six 20-inch shafts at 400 grains with a 46-grain aluminum insert that produces 14 percent front-of-center, which Wicked Ridge claims gives up to 20 percent tighter groups than its previous arrow. Six per pack is the practical detail: that is a full quiver and spares in one purchase.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 in |
| Weight | 400 gr |
| Straightness | within .004 in |
| Insert | 46 gr aluminum |
| Front of center | 14% |
| Nock | Alpha-Nock HP with aluminum bushing |
| Vanes | 3.5 in Bohning X Vanes, slight offset |
What it does well
- Six per pack, which is a quiver's worth in one box
- 14 percent front-of-center published, which most makers do not state
- A 46-grain aluminum insert rather than a plastic one
- Alpha-Nock engages the string deeply, which reduces shoot-over

Bloodsport Witness 20-inch
Six bolts with the full dimensional picture published: .300 inch inside diameter, .344 outside, .003 straightness, and a 95-grain brass insert in the 20-inch version. The Blood Ring near the nock is a genuinely useful idea — the color on the ring after a hit tells you something about where the arrow went.

| Length | 20 in (22 in also offered) |
| Inside diameter | 0.300 in |

| Nock | Half-moon, installed |
| Feature | Blood Ring hit indicator |
What it does well
- Full dimensional specification published, which most budget bolts skip
- Six per pack with a 95-grain brass insert already fitted
- The Blood Ring gives you information after the shot
- Rugged Wrap construction is built for 400 fps-plus bows

Carbon Express Maxima Contour Crossbolts
Dual Spine Weight Forward is not marketing: the shaft has two spines, a stiffer section forward of a softer one, and Carbon Express claims it cuts oscillation in half. The figures are the reason to buy — .002 inch straightness checked to a ten-thousandth, spine sorted to .0025 inch, weight sorted to 1 grain. Nothing else on this page publishes that level of sorting.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 in |
| Weight | 390 gr |
| Diameter | 0.348 in |
| Straightness | +/- .002 in |
| Spine tolerance | +/- .0025 in |
| Weight tolerance | +/- 1.0 gr |
| Vanes and nocks | 3 in Dragon Vanes; moon nocks installed, C-Nocks included |
What it does well
- Straightness, spine and weight tolerances all published and all tight
- Dual-spine construction claims 50 percent less oscillation
- Both moon nocks and flat C-Nocks in the pack, so it fits more bows
- Laser-matched sets rather than randomly boxed shafts

Guide Gear Trophy Hunter Pro (by Victory)
Made by Victory Archery, carrying a 110-grain brass insert — the heaviest on this page — plus a red lighted half-moon nock and Victory's ICE coating, which the listing credits with easier penetration and less noise through the rail. The heavy insert is the reason to pick these: front-of-center weight is what makes a bolt fly like a dart.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 in |
| Brass insert | 110 gr |
| Nock | Red lighted half-moon |
| Carbon | 100% standard high modulus |
| Vanes | 3 in Bohning X-Vanes |
| Coating | Victory ICE |
| Straightness |
What it does well
- A 110-grain brass insert is the heaviest here, which maximizes front-of-center
- Lighted nocks included rather than a separate purchase
- ICE coating reduces rail friction and noise

How we picked
Published total weight first, then published straightness tolerance, then insert mass where the listing prints it, then whether the arrows are weight-matched to each other. A shaft that does not publish a straightness figure is not disqualified, but it sits below one that does - for an animal this size you want to know. Our scoring axes are on the methodology page.
The published-figures table
| Bolt | Length | Published weight | Straightness | Insert |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TenPoint EVO-X Lighted CenterPunch16 | 16 in | 400 gr | within .001 in | |
| Wicked Ridge Match 400 | 20 in | 400 gr | within .004 in | 46 gr aluminum, 14% FOC |
| Bloodsport Witness 20-inch | 20 in | 0.003 in | 95 gr brass | |
| Carbon Express Maxima Contour | 20 in | 390 gr | +/- .002 in | |
| Guide Gear Trophy Hunter Pro | 20 in | 110 gr brass |
The insert is the elk decision
A 46 gr aluminum insert and a 110 gr brass one are a 64 gr difference at the very front of the arrow. That changes two things at once: total arrow weight goes up, and front-of-center goes up because the added mass is all ahead of the balance point. Both help penetration, and the second one also stabilizes the arrow in flight behind a fixed broadhead.
This is why the Bloodsport Witness and the Guide Gear Trophy Hunter Pro are on a page about elk despite being the two cheapest arrows here. Bloodsport publishes a 95 gr brass insert on the 20-inch shaft and Guide Gear publishes 110 gr. Those are figures you would otherwise pay for separately, and they are already in the arrow. The limit is your bow's warranty: most makers specify a minimum arrow weight and some specify a maximum, so check the manual before you add mass.
Straightness, and when it matters
Straightness tolerance is the figure bolt marketing leans on hardest, and it matters less at 20 yards than the price difference suggests. At 50 yards behind a fixed broadhead it starts to show up in group size, and an elk shot is often the longer end of a crossbow's range. The spread on this page runs from within .001 in on the CenterPunch16 to .004 in on the Match 400, with the Maxima Contour at +/- .002 in and also publishing spine and weight tolerances, which almost nobody else does.
Weight matching between arrows is arguably more useful than either. TenPoint matches the CenterPunch16 to within 1 gr per arrow and Carbon Express publishes +/- 1.0 gr. Six arrows that weigh the same hit the same place; six arrows that are each perfectly straight but 8 grains apart do not. The wider discussion is on best crossbow bolts.
What the top three are each for
TenPoint EVO-X Lighted CenterPunch16
400 gr at 16 in, straightness within .001 in, weight matched within 1 gr, 33 MSI carbon, an Alpha-Nock HP with a lighted unit good for about 24 h, and 2.1 in Q2i vanes with a slight offset. It is the shortest and best-specified shaft here, built for TenPoint's reverse-draw bows, and the lighted nock earns its place on an elk hunt where the shot often comes in the last few minutes of light. Confirm lighted nocks are legal where you hunt.
Wicked Ridge Match 400
400 gr at 20 in with a published 46 gr aluminum insert and 14% front-of-center, Alpha-Nock HP with an aluminum bushing and 3.5 in Bohning X Vanes. Straightness is the loosest on this page at within .004 in, which is the trade for six matched arrows at a sensible price. It is the sane high-volume choice: buy two packs, shoot one, hunt the other.
Bloodsport Witness 20-inch
0.003 in straightness, 0.300 in inside diameter, 0.344 in outside, and the 95 gr brass insert that makes it interesting for elk. Bloodsport does not publish a total weight, which is why it is third rather than first, but a 0.003 in shaft with a heavy brass insert at this price is the cheapest route to a high-front-of-center elk arrow on this site. The Blood Ring hit indicator is a genuinely useful extra on an animal that does not always leave much of a trail.
Our pick
The CenterPunch16 if your bow takes a 16-inch arrow and you want the tightest published tolerances with a lighted nock included. The Match 400 if you want 20-inch arrows and will shoot enough of them that cost per arrow matters. The Bloodsport Witness if you would rather spend the difference on a heavy insert and a better broadhead, which for elk is a defensible way to spend it.
What we would not take elk hunting
- An aluminum practice shaft. Fine for volume at 20 yards, not what you want behind a fixed head at 45. See best crossbow bolts.
- A 250-grain shaft. The light end of the market exists for speed, and speed is not the elk problem.
- A shaft with no published straightness figure, if a comparable one has it.
- A nock that does not match your string. This is a dry-fire risk, not a performance preference.
- A mixed quiver. Six arrows of two different weights is six different trajectories.
Finish the setup
The shaft is one of three parts and arguably the least decisive. The head is covered on best crossbow broadheads for elk, which ranks fixed heads on published blade thickness, and the bow is covered on best crossbow for elk hunting, which ranks on published kinetic energy. Once all three are chosen, re-zero: changing insert weight changes trajectory, and a zero set with a 46 gr insert is not valid with a 110 gr one. How to sight in a crossbow covers the procedure.
