Barnett's two distinguishing technologies are HyperFlite, which fires .204-diameter arrows for a claimed 25 percent deeper penetration, and its crank cocking device, which publishes 93 percent resistance reduction and 13 pounds of force at the handle — the most specific cocking figures any aftermarket maker states.
Barnett has been making crossbows since 1962 and the range spans from a two-hundred-dollar starter package to a rangefinding-scope flagship. Two things run through it: a willingness to publish specific numbers, and TriggerTech frictionless releases on the better models.
In detail
Five Barnett models
Barnett Hyper Raptor GTX
425 fps and 152 ft-lb of kinetic energy through .204-diameter HyperFlite arrows, with a laser rangefinding scope in the box. Barnett claims over 25 percent deeper penetration than a standard-diameter arrow. Note the cocking aid: it ships with a rope cocker, not a crank, so budget for one if that is why you are here.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 425 fps |
| Kinetic energy | 152 ft-lb |
| Arrow | .204 HyperFlite, 20 in |
| Cocking aid | Rope cocking device |
| Trigger pull | 3 lb |
| Trigger | TriggerTech frictionless, anti-dry-fire nock sensor |
| Scope | BUK OPS X-Factor laser rangefinding |
What it does well
- 152 ft-lb is the highest published kinetic-energy figure here
- A rangefinding scope is included, which is normally a several-hundred-dollar add
- The TriggerTech release is the crispest trigger spec in Barnett's line
- Pivoting limb pockets and an adjustable buttstock help fit

Barnett Alpha 410
Barnett ships this one with the crank cocking device already installed, which is the thing most bows at this price make you buy separately. Add the illuminated multi-reticle scope, quiver, arrows and lube and it is a complete first setup with no cocking-aid decision left to make.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Cocking aid | Crank cocking device, installed |
| Scope | 4x32 illuminated red/green multi-reticle |
| Arrows | Two 20 in Headhunter carbon, 100 gr points |
| Quiver | Lightweight side-mount, 3 arrow |
| Included | String and rail lube wax |
| Speed | |
| Cocked width |
What it does well
- The crank comes installed, not boxed separately or sold as an accessory
- Complete package: scope, quiver, arrows, wax
- Multi-reticle illuminated scope at a mid-range price

Barnett Hyper Whitetail 410
410 fps through HyperFlite small-diameter arrows, with a rope cocking sled, an illuminated 4x32 scope and a sling in the bundle. It is the cheapest route to the deeper-penetration arrow geometry, and it is honest about being a rope-cocked bow.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 410 fps |
| Arrow | HyperFlite small-diameter |
| Cocking aid | Rope cocking sled |
| Scope | Illuminated 4x32 |
| Included | Extra 5-pack of HyperFlite arrows, sling, string dampeners |
| Rails | Picatinny for accessories |
| Cocked width |
What it does well
- 410 fps with the penetration advantage of a .204 arrow
- The bundle includes a spare 5-pack of arrows and a sling
- Soft rubber touchpoints and an aluminum flight track

Barnett Explorer XP370
370 fps, an adjustable buttstock and a red dot, for well under four hundred dollars. The adjustable stock matters more than the price tag suggests: a bow that fits a short-armed or heavily-layered shooter is a bow that shoots where you look.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 370 fps |
| Stock | Adjustable buttstock |
| Sight | Illuminated red dot |
| Arrows | Headhunter bolts included |
| Quiver | Side-mount |

What it does well
- An adjustable buttstock at an entry price
- 370 fps is enough for deer inside 40 yards
- Compact and light for a full-size package

Barnett Recruit XP
330 fps from a deliberately light draw weight, with a rope cocking device, a 3-dot sight and two arrows. Barnett builds the Recruit line around shooters who cannot or should not pull a 200-pound bow, which makes it the honest answer for a youth setup rather than a cut-down adult bow.
| Published spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 330 fps |
| Draw weight | Light, for shooters of all ages and abilities |
| Cocking aid | Rope cocking device |
| Sight | 1x30 mm 3-dot |
| Safety | Soft Lok floating bristle retainer, anti-dry-fire, TriggerTech release |
| Included | Two 20 in Headhunter arrows, side-mount quiver, wax |
| Cocked width |
What it does well
- Light draw weight is the design goal, not a compromise
- Three layers of safety hardware including anti-dry-fire
- 330 fps still carries enough energy for deer at close range

HyperFlite: what a small-diameter arrow does
A standard crossbow bolt has a .300 in inside diameter and around .344 in outside. HyperFlite shafts are .204 in. A thinner shaft has less surface area dragging through tissue, which is the mechanism behind Barnett's claim of over 25 percent deeper penetration. The Hyper Raptor GTX publishes 152 ft-lb of kinetic energy at 425 fps, the highest energy figure on this site.
The cost is lock-in. HyperFlite arrows are proprietary, more expensive per dozen, and the only arrows those bows should shoot. If you like buying bolts on price, this is the wrong platform.
The crank, which is the best-documented in the business
Barnett's crank cocking device publishes two figures nobody else does: 93 percent resistance reduction and 13 pounds of pull at the handle. It also publishes a named compatibility list running to dozens of models — Raptor, Whitetail Hunter, Ghost, Recruit, Droptine, Wildcat and more — which means you can verify fit before you buy rather than after.
That matters because Barnett's own bows mostly ship with rope cockers. The Hyper Raptor at 425 fps comes with a rope; the Hyper Whitetail with a sled. If cocking is your issue, buy the bow and the crank together and read the compatibility list first. The exception is the Alpha 410, which arrives with the crank already installed.
What Barnett publishes, and where it goes quiet
| Model | Speed | Energy | Cocking aid | Cocked width |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyper Raptor GTX | 425 fps | 152 ft-lb | Rope cocking device | |
| Hyper Whitetail 410 | 410 fps | Rope cocking sled | ||
| Alpha 410 | Crank, installed | |||
| Explorer XP370 | 370 fps | Not specified | ||
| Recruit XP | 330 fps | Rope cocking device | ||
| Wildcat CRX | 280 fps | Cocking device included |
The safety hardware, which is genuinely good
- TriggerTech frictionless release, on the Hyper Raptor and Recruit, with a published 3 lb pull on the Raptor.
- Anti-dry-fire across the range, including the two-hundred-dollar Wildcat.
- Soft Lok floating bristle arrow retainer on the Recruit, which holds the arrow against the rail on a cocked bow.
- Pass-through foregrip and finger safety reminders, which keep the forward hand below the flight deck.
On the Recruit line this adds up to the fullest published safety package on this site, which is why it is our pick for a young shooter.
Who should buy a Barnett
If penetration is your priority — a heavier animal, a quartering shot, a bow you want margin from — the HyperFlite platform is a real engineering answer and Barnett is the only maker offering it at this price. If you already own a Barnett and cocking has become a problem, the 93 percent crank is the cheapest fix available anywhere.
If cocked width matters to you, look at CenterPoint instead: they publish it and Barnett does not. See Barnett vs CenterPoint.
